Maureen Varnavsky

After 40 years working as an interior designer, often enabling relationships between artists and prospective clients, Maureen is now following her heart and making art herself.

Since she retired from full-time work, Maureen has studied at Griffith University, graduating with a Degree in Fine Arts in 2023.

Her favoured mediums being painting, ceramics and bronze sculpture. She prefers to investigate various methods and styles across the mediums, enjoying the journey and the freedom to be lead by the process.

Her work presents a series of varied images, subjects and styles.

Not one predictable expression, but a variety of expressions and reactions. Maureen avoids the representational, other than in her Still Life work.

She has a great fondness for the simplicity of form and tone as exemplified by Giorgio Morandi in the mid 1900’s.

Aware of the transience of life, Maureen’s abstract landscape paintings bring a sense of time and place, capturing a moment of memory, of experience now passed but forever in the soul.

Maureen works in oil, acrylic and mixed media,

allowing the process to direct the creation.

Sometimes energetic, sometimes quiet, the paintings avoid the representational view, seeking rather to find the essence of an experience.

In her bronze sculptures, Maureen explores the human condition, focusing on the aloneness of the individual. Connections that are broken or never fulfilled. The missing touch. Created in a medium that invites the touch.
